The scope. Structural carpentry for a skylight opening, and a hardwood pergola over an outdoor entertaining area.
Skylights are structural work. Putting a hole in a roof means cutting structure. The load that was going through the rafters you removed has to go somewhere, which means trimmers, and it means getting the framing right before the roofer arrives — not discovering the issue when it leaks.
Hardwood outdoors. A pergola lives outside permanently. Species selection, fixing specification and the detailing where posts meet the ground decide whether it looks good in fifteen years or needs replacing in five.
