Why facade carpentry is unforgiving. Cladding is the most visible carpentry on any building. Batten spacing, shadow lines and junction detail are all read from the footpath, and a setout error at the bottom of a facade compounds all the way up. The work is done twice if the setout is wrong once.
Exposure and fixings. External timber has to survive Melbourne weather cycling for decades. Timber selection, fixing specification and detailing at the wet junctions determine whether a facade holds up or fails early.
